Summer Disasters: Minimizing Hail Damage on Your Roof

Hailstorms are pretty common in summer.

Ridgeline Construction Roofing & Exteriors, one of the state’s top gutter installation companies, shares some tips on getting your home hailstorm-ready below.

How Can Hailstorms Still Occur in Summer?

Hail is essentially just large chunks of ice; shouldn’t that mean there’s little chance they would happen in scorching summer temperatures? This isn’t the case.

Hail is formed when updrafts or rising air currents carry water droplets high enough into the atmosphere that they freeze and fall onto the ground as hailstones. If the updrafts are strong enough, the temperatures hot and volatile enough, and the upper atmosphere cool enough, then large enough hailstones can be formed. In fact, hailstones are actually a relatively common occurrence in mid-latitude countries in early summer.

How then can you prepare your roof for possible hailstorms?

Trim Overhanging Limbs

Whether it’s in anticipation of storms or hail, you should regularly trim overhanging tree limbs that can get knocked down by wind or hailstones, and damage your roof.

Periodic Roof Maintenance and Inspections

But the problem with hailstones is you can’t really predict when they’re coming. And, your roof is likely to suffer more extensive damage if it already has pre-existing cracks. That’s why it would be more prudent to schedule frequent roof maintenance work and roof inspections.

Your roof is more likely than not to suffer some form of damage after a hailstorm, but you can minimize it through frequent roof maintenance.
